About the Soma Laboratory Lyra-8

SOMA describes the Lyra-8 as 'organismic' because its eight oscillators genuinely interact with and influence each other's behavior rather than sounding as isolated independent voices - touching multiple pads simultaneously produces interference and beating patterns that shift unpredictably in ways a conventional polyphonic synth's cleanly separated voices never would. This design philosophy prioritizes emergent, living-feeling texture over precise, repeatable pitch control.

Its touch-sensitive pads replace a traditional keyboard entirely, a deliberate choice that steers players toward drones, textures and ambient soundscapes rather than conventional scales and melodies - the Lyra-8 has found a specific following among ambient, experimental and drone musicians precisely because it resists being played like a standard synthesizer and rewards a more exploratory, hands-on approach to sound.

Sound character of the Soma Laboratory Lyra-8

The Lyra-8 runs 8 simple analog oscillators through organ-like drone circuitry with almost no conventional envelope or sequencer control, instead reacting to touch and internal oscillator interaction - producing a constantly shifting, breathing, semi-chaotic drone character that Soma itself calls 'organismic' rather than a fixed, repeatable tone.
