About the Taylor 114ce

The 114ce uses Taylor's Grand Auditorium body shape - a large lower bout paired with a tighter waist, designed as a versatile all-rounder rather than specialized for fingerstyle or heavy strumming specifically. The top is solid Sitka spruce, while the back and sides use layered (plywood-construction) sapele rather than solid wood, a common cost-saving choice at this price point that Taylor pairs with a solid top to keep tone quality high while managing price.

The neck is hard rock maple with a genuine African ebony fingerboard, 20 frets and a 25.5-inch scale at a 1 11/16-inch nut width, and a Venetian (rounded) cutaway gives full access to the upper frets. Electronics are Taylor's Expression System 2, an active pickup system designed to translate the guitar's acoustic voice through a PA or amp without the quacky, overly piezo-like tone common to basic under-saddle-only systems. A padded gig bag is included.

Sound character of the Taylor 114ce

The 114ce's solid Sitka spruce top gives it Taylor's characteristically bright, articulate voice with strong note separation, while its layered (not solid) sapele back and sides - a cost-saving spec at this price tier - produce somewhat less resonance and sustain than a fully solid-wood instrument.

The history of the Taylor 114ce

Taylor's 100 Series was designed as the company's most accessible line while still building guitars at its own California and Mexico facilities rather than outsourcing entirely, letting new and developing players own a genuine Taylor rather than a licensed budget line. The 114ce, with its solid top and Grand Auditorium shape, has been a common recommendation for players moving up from a first beginner guitar who want real gigging-capable electronics without the cost of Taylor's higher series.
