ESP's budget-line take on its own Eclipse shape: a mahogany body with a deep-set Set-Thru neck joint, active EMG 81/60 humbuckers built for high-gain metal, and a 24.75-inch scale that puts it in direct, deliberate comparison with a Gibson Les Paul - at a fraction of the weight and price. Built in Asia rather than at ESP's Japanese Custom Shop, it's the guitar that put the Eclipse shape into the hands of working metal musicians rather than just Metallica's James Hetfield.

About the ESP LTD EC-1000

The EC-1000's body construction is described by ESP as "Set-Thru" - a deeper, more deeply glued neck-to-body joint than a standard set neck, though not the full neck-through-body construction of a true neck-through guitar. The goal is the same one neck-through designs chase: more wood-to-wood contact at the joint for better sustain and resonance transfer, without the added manufacturing cost of a fully through-body neck.

What separates this guitar from every passive-pickup instrument in this research series is its electronics: the EMG 81 (bridge) and EMG 60 (neck) are active pickups, meaning they run through an onboard preamp powered by a 9-volt battery rather than relying purely on magnet and coil like a passive humbucker. That battery has to be swapped periodically and can die mid-gig if neglected - a real, practical trade-off for the higher output and more controlled, compressed tone active pickups deliver, which is exactly why EMG 81/60 has been the default metal pickup pairing for decades.

The fingerboard is Macassar ebony on the Vintage Black finish (other finishes and years have used pau ferro), paired with 24 extra-jumbo stainless steel frets - stainless being noticeably more wear-resistant than standard nickel-silver fretwire, a detail that matters more on a guitar built for fast, repetitive shred technique than on one meant mostly for chords.

Sound character of the ESP LTD EC-1000

The EMG 81 at the bridge is the reference pickup for modern high-gain metal: tight, compressed low end, present and articulate mids even under heavy distortion, and clear top end that keeps fast picking legible instead of turning to mush. The EMG 60 at the neck is voiced rounder and fuller, deliberately aimed at the warmer, thicker character of earlier heavy metal tones rather than trying to match the 81's aggression - together they cover both eras of metal rhythm and lead tone from one guitar.

Because both pickups are active, the overall output and compression level stay consistent regardless of how hard or soft the strings are picked, a genuinely different response than a passive pickup's more dynamic, touch-sensitive behaviour - some players describe active EMGs as slightly dry or clinical for that reason, a real trade-off rather than a universal upgrade over passive pickups.

Aggressive Punchy Metallic Modern/Hi-Fi

What owners of the ESP LTD EC-1000 say

The comparison to a Gibson Les Paul comes up constantly in owner and reviewer discussion, almost always favourably for the EC-1000 on two specific points: it weighs noticeably less, and its EMG 81/60 pairing delivers a more immediately usable, high-gain-ready metal tone without needing pedal or amp compensation the way a passive-pickup Les Paul often does for the same style. Fast playability under the hand is treated as close to a given at this price point.

The manufacturing-origin debate is the one recurring point of genuine disagreement - some long-time owners and dealers hold a preference for Korean-built (Peerless) examples, particularly for resale value, while a meaningful number of Indonesian-production owners report equally strong build quality, suggesting the country-of-origin question matters less in practice than checking the individual instrument.

Playability & handling of the ESP LTD EC-1000

Reviewers consistently note the EC-1000 feels dramatically lighter in hand than the Gibson Les Paul it invites comparison to, aided by a contoured belly cut where the Les Paul body stays flat against the player. The 42mm (1.65 in.) nut width and Thin U neck profile are built specifically for speed, and multiple reviews describe the guitar as noticeably faster under the fingers than other shred-oriented instruments in its price range.

The practical catch specific to active-pickup guitars applies here: because the EMG 81/60 set needs battery power to function at all, a dead 9-volt means a completely silent guitar rather than just a weaker signal - carrying a spare battery is not optional for gigging players the way it would be with a passive-pickup instrument.

Recommended accessories & strings for the ESP LTD EC-1000

The guitar ships with D'Addario XL110 strings, and the 24.75-inch scale plus active EMGs make it well suited to standard and moderately down-tuned playing without needing especially heavy gauges. No case is included - ESP sells a matching form-fit case separately, worth budgeting for given the exposed binding on the Vintage Black finish.

The single most important accessory for this specific guitar is simply spare 9-volt batteries, kept in the gig bag rather than assumed to be there. Beyond that, the EMG 81/60 pairing is designed to go straight into a high-gain amp or distortion/metal pedal with minimal fuss - these pickups are voiced to sound right without extensive EQ tweaking, which is part of why they became the default metal choice in the first place.

The history of the ESP LTD EC-1000

The Eclipse name is older than the shape most players associate with it. ESP first used it in the late 1980s for a completely different, Telecaster-shaped body with an arched top, a design that was later discontinued. The name was recycled in 1993 for the mahogany, set-neck, 24.75-inch-scale single-cutaway shape that carries it today - a design fact-check worth knowing before assuming Eclipse always meant this body.

That 1993 Eclipse invites an obvious and explicitly acknowledged comparison to the Gibson Les Paul - same body wood, same general construction logic, same scale length - but was built from the outset with a lighter, thinner body for better ergonomics rather than as a straight copy. LTD, ESP's more affordable sister brand, adopted the Eclipse shape as the foundation for its own EC series, bringing the same fundamental design down to a price point regular working musicians could actually afford, built in Asian factories rather than ESP's Japanese Custom Shop. James Hetfield of Metallica became closely associated with the Eclipse shape through his ESP endorsement, but the models he actually plays - the Truckster, Iron Cross, and his current Explorer-shaped Snakebyte - are hand-built Custom Shop instruments, distinct from the mass-produced EC-1000 this research covers.

About ESP LTD as a manufacturer

ESP is the parent brand behind both the Japanese Custom Shop instruments played by artists like Hetfield and the more affordable LTD line the EC-1000 belongs to - two tiers of the same design language built for very different budgets. LTD-branded guitars including the EC-1000 have historically been built in Korea, at the Peerless factory, and later in Indonesia; ESP shifted 1000-series production toward Indonesia around 2018-2019, stating publicly that Indonesian build quality had caught up to Korean standards while Korean labour costs kept rising.

That move generated genuine, ongoing debate in the ESP community rather than settling the question cleanly - some players and dealers continue to favour Korean-built (Peerless factory) examples for tighter quality control and stronger resale value, while others report Indonesian-made units matching their Korean counterparts closely, with quality varying more by individual guitar and era than by country of origin alone. Buyers of used EC-1000s often check the serial number specifically to identify factory origin and production year.

Notable players & recordings featuring the ESP LTD EC-1000

Equipboard documents current players using this specific EC-1000/EC-1000 Deluxe line, including Jack Simmons of Slaughter to Prevail, Ronnie Radke of Falling In Reverse, Charles Hedger of Cradle of Filth, Michael Money of Escape the Fate, and Magnus Henriksson of Eclipse - a genuinely active, modern metal roster rather than legacy names.

An important distinction has to be made from the guitar's namesake shape: James Hetfield, Bill Kelliher of Mastodon, and Will Adler of Lamb of God all helped shape ESP's Eclipse-based signature designs, but each plays hand-built ESP Custom Shop instruments rather than the mass-produced LTD EC-1000 covered here. Their historical importance to the Eclipse shape's reputation is real, but it belongs to a different, far more expensive tier of guitar than this one.
