About the Fender Gold Foil Jazz Bass

The Gold Foil Jazz Bass takes the Jazz Bass body shape and control layout and fits it with gold foil pickups - a pickup style originally associated with budget 1960s makers like Teisco rather than Fender's own single-coil designs, known for a brighter, slightly lo-fi, more percussive attack than a standard J pickup. Fender's Gold Foil series pairs these pickups with retro-styled cosmetic touches such as bound bodies and block fingerboard inlays not found on standard Jazz Bass models.

It occupies a niche position in Fender's Mexican-made lineup: aimed at players seeking a distinct alternative voicing to the classic J-pickup sound and a visually distinct retro aesthetic, rather than a vintage-correct Jazz Bass reissue.

Sound character of the Fender Gold Foil Jazz Bass

Gold foil pickups - originally a budget design from 1960s Japanese makers like Teisco, now reproduced by Fender in this series - use a wide, flat metal foil under the strings instead of traditional polepieces, giving a wider frequency response with a distinctive bright, slightly lo-fi upper end rather than the pronounced midrange hump of a standard Jazz Bass pickup. It's a more idiosyncratic, vintage-quirky voice than Fender's usual single-coil Jazz Bass tone.
