A defining 1980s analog polysynth built around digitally controlled oscillators that stay in tune without the drift older fully analog VCO designs suffer, paired with a lush chorus effect that became its signature sound.
About the Roland Juno-106
The Juno-106's DCOs (Digitally Controlled Oscillators) use digital circuitry only to keep pitch stable, while the actual sound generation remains genuinely analog - a hybrid approach that solved the tuning-drift problem plaguing earlier fully analog polysynths without sacrificing analog warmth. Its built-in chorus circuit, offering two depth settings, thickens the sound with a stereo width and shimmer that became inseparable from the Juno-106's identity across decades of pop, house and techno production.
Built as one of the first widely affordable full MIDI-equipped polysynths of its era, the Juno-106 put velocity-insensitive but reliably tuned polyphonic analog sound within reach of a much broader range of musicians than earlier professional-tier synths, a democratizing effect that partly explains why so many examples survive and remain actively used in studios and live rigs today.

Sound character of the Roland Juno-106
The Juno-106's warmth comes from its DCOs (digitally-clocked but analog-generating oscillators) feeding a genuine analog filter, and its identity is inseparable from the built-in stereo chorus circuit, which widens and thickens the raw DCO tone into the lush, shimmering pad sound it is famous for.
