Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster

About the Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster

There is nothing exotic in the Affinity Stratocaster's construction, and that's intentional: a poplar body, a bolt-on maple neck in a C profile, and a fingerboard offered in maple or Indian laurel - laurel being the budget-tier equivalent of the pau ferro Fender uses one price bracket up, another rosewood substitute for a guitar built to a strict cost target. Three ceramic single-coil pickups replace the Alnico magnets found on pricier Squier and Fender lines; ceramic magnets are cheaper to produce and tend toward a more direct, slightly less nuanced output, a genuine and honest trade-off rather than a hidden downgrade.

The 2021 refresh is the most recent point where Fender actually changed the guitar rather than just its finish options: the nut widened to 1.65 inches (42mm), the pickups were redesigned for what the company describes as more refined voicing, split-shaft tuners replaced the previous hardware, and the headstock picked up a larger 1970s-style logo. None of these are dramatic changes individually, but together they represent a real, if modest, spec update on a guitar that spends most of its life being compared to guitars costing five or ten times as much.

Sound character of the Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster

Ceramic single-coil magnets, as used across all three pickup positions here, generally produce a more direct, slightly hotter and less airy output than the Alnico magnets found on pricier Squier and Fender lines - a real, audible character difference rather than just a cost-cutting footnote. The 2021 pickup redesign is specifically credited with refining that character rather than changing the fundamental ceramic-magnet voicing, closing some of the gap with Alnico-equipped guitars without eliminating it.

On the poplar body - a tonally fairly neutral wood commonly used across budget-tier Fender-family guitars - the overall voice stays true to the basic Stratocaster template: bright, articulate, with the familiar quack in the in-between switch positions, just delivered with slightly more directness and slightly less complexity than a guitar built with premium alder or ash and Alnico pickups would offer.

What owners of the Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster say

The recurring, almost universal theme among current owners is pleasant surprise at the factory setup quality for the price - a straight neck and low, clean action right out of the box is treated as a genuine win rather than an expectation. That sentiment gets tempered by realistic expectations rather than inflated hype: reviewers describe the sound as good with minor adjustment rather than claiming it competes with guitars several times its price, an honest assessment that seems to match how the guitar is actually marketed and positioned.

The redesigned 2021 pickups specifically earned points for exceeding lowered expectations - several owners mention going in skeptical of ceramic single-coils based on older Squier reputations and coming away more impressed than anticipated, particularly with the neck pickup's character.

Playability & handling of the Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster

Owner reports on the 2021-and-later Affinity Stratocaster describe a surprisingly professional factory setup for the price point - a straight neck, low action, and clean intonation right out of the box, which isn't guaranteed even on some considerably more expensive guitars. One reviewer's more measured take is worth including alongside the praise: with minor EQ and setup adjustments, the guitar sounds good rather than great - an honest, realistic ceiling for an entry-level instrument rather than a guitar pretending to punch above its actual weight.

The redesigned ceramic pickups drew some initial scepticism from players expecting the weaker single coils of older budget Squiers, with several specifically singling out the neck pickup as a pleasant surprise once they'd actually played it rather than judged it on spec sheet alone.

Recommended accessories & strings for the Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster

At the standard 25.5-inch scale, .009-.042 or .010-.046 both work depending on preference. This guitar is frequently sold bundled in beginner packs with an amp, cable and gig bag rather than as a standalone instrument, so buyers purchasing it on its own should budget separately for a case or gig bag, which typically isn't included.

Given the ceramic pickups' more direct, less nuanced character compared with Alnico-equipped guitars, a genuinely useful first upgrade path for players who outgrow the stock sound is a pedal-based approach - a decent overdrive or compressor can go a long way toward smoothing out the ceramic pickups' rawer edges without needing to replace the guitar itself.

The history of the Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster

Squier exists because of a crisis, not a marketing idea. Through the CBS-ownership years, Fender's share of the worldwide "Fender-type" guitar market had shrunk to roughly 15 percent, undercut by cheap, unauthorised Japanese copies flooding the market during what collectors now call the lawsuit era - a name that references real legal action (Gibson sued Ibanez over headstock design in 1977) that ultimately proved toothless, settled out of court without stopping the copies. Rather than keep fighting a losing legal battle, Fender's new management, which included former Yamaha executives, chose to beat the copyists at their own game: found Fender Japan Ltd. in 1982 and start building affordable guitars using some of the very same manufacturing suppliers producing the unauthorised copies - notably FujiGen Gakki, the same factory that built Ibanez guitars including the RG550 this research series already covered. To keep the budget line from diluting the main Fender name, the company revived Squier - a dormant string-manufacturer name it had owned since 1965 - for these Japanese-made instruments.

Production moved from Japan to Korea in 1987, then on to China and Indonesia, where Squier is still built today. The Affinity name itself is considerably younger and less dramatic in origin than the Squier brand as a whole: it wasn't a new design at all, just a late-1997 rebrand of Chinese-made Squiers that had already been on sale since 1995, introduced specifically so dealers had a proper product name instead of informally calling guitars "the Chinese one" or "the Korean one" by country of manufacture. The original Affinity Stratocaster carried unremarkable "Banshee" pickups with a poor reputation and launched at roughly £129 - modest beginnings for a name that has since become one of the best-known entry points into playing guitar at all.

About Squier as a manufacturer

Squier is Fender's own budget subsidiary brand, created specifically to compete in the price tier Fender's main name couldn't credibly occupy without damaging its own image. The strategy behind it - use the same low-cost manufacturing base as your unauthorised copyists, under a separate name, rather than only fight them in court - is one of the more pragmatic pieces of guitar industry history, and it worked well enough that Squier production has continued uninterrupted for over four decades across four different countries.

Within the Squier lineup itself, Affinity currently sits as the second tier from the bottom, above the even more basic Bullet series (which uses a hardtail bridge rather than this guitar's 2-point tremolo and offers fewer finish options) and below the Classic Vibe and Paranormal lines that chase more specific vintage or unusual character. That positioning - genuinely playable, genuinely affordable, genuinely unglamorous - has been Affinity's identity since 1997 and remains unchanged today.

Notable players & recordings featuring the Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster

Honestly: no professional artist uses the Affinity Stratocaster as a primary instrument, and that's not a research gap - it's the accurate reality of a guitar built specifically for beginners and budget-conscious players rather than touring musicians.

What this guitar's real significance is instead is structural rather than individual: for an enormous number of guitarists worldwide, the Affinity Stratocaster is the first Fender-family instrument they ever owned, the guitar countless people first learned to play scales, chords and their favourite riffs on before eventually moving up to something more expensive - a genuinely large cultural footprint that just doesn't show up as an artist endorsement list.
