About the Yamaha BB734A

Built on a 34-inch scale with a 3-piece alder/maple body and a bolt-on 5-piece maple/mahogany neck (6-bolt miter joint, satin polyurethane finish), the BB734A pairs a rosewood fingerboard (10-inch radius, 21 medium frets) with two YGD Custom V7 pickups using Alnico V magnets. A 3-band active EQ (bass, middle, treble) runs alongside an active/passive switch and a battery-alert LED, giving a wide tonal range from a single instrument. Hardware includes a convertible Vintage Plus bridge with brass saddles on a steel plate, 19mm string spacing, lightweight open-gear tuners and a 3-ply black pickguard, strung from the factory with D'Addario EXL170 strings (.045-.100). It ships with a gig bag.

Sound character of the Yamaha BB734A

The dual YGD Custom V7 pickups and powerful 3-band active EQ give the BB734A an unusually wide tonal range for the price, from a warm, rounded passive tone to a punchy, room-filling active sound that more than one owner describes as surprisingly big for the instrument's size.

Full-bodied Warm Punchy Resonant

What owners of the Yamaha BB734A say

Feedback leans strongly positive, anchored by two recurring points: a neck feel that Fender-accustomed players find immediately comfortable, and a tonal range wide enough that reviewers compare it favorably to instruments costing well over $2000. The bass is also frequently described as nearly identical to Yamaha's flagship BBP34, differing mainly in where it's built and in offering active/passive switching - a detail that reads as remarkable value for the price tier. The downsides that surface are minor and inconsistent rather than systemic: the occasional loose jack or neck adjustment, and a handful of players finding the pickups a bit less characterful than vintage BB-series units, but neither comes up often enough to read as a pattern.

Playability & handling of the Yamaha BB734A

Players consistently describe the neck as strongly reminiscent of a Fender Jazz Bass - fast and comfortable, with some describing the overall feel as landing somewhere between a Jazz and a Precision neck. The instrument is noted as relatively light for a BB-series bass, which combined with that familiar neck profile makes it an easy instrument to settle into quickly for anyone coming from a Fender-style bass. The active/passive switching and dual-pickup setup unlock a genuinely wide tonal range, with the 3-band EQ singled out as powerful enough to shape tone significantly rather than just offering token adjustment. One owner called it probably the biggest-sounding bass they'd played, describing it as capable of filling a room on its own. On the downside, a few scattered reports mention minor build inconsistencies - a loose input jack or a neck needing adjustment out of the box - and some players find the pickups a touch more generic-sounding than older BB-series models, though this isn't a universal complaint.

Recommended accessories & strings for the Yamaha BB734A

A gig bag is included, covering basic transport. The factory D'Addario EXL170 strings (.045-.100) are a solid, widely used gauge that many players keep as-is, and since the preamp is active, keeping a spare 9V battery on hand matters - the battery-alert LED gives fair warning before it dies mid-set.

The history of the Yamaha BB734A

Part of Yamaha's BB700 tier, the BB734A brings active 2-band electronics to the long-running BB series as a four-string.

About Yamaha as a manufacturer

The "BB" stands for Broad Bass, Yamaha's third bass model line, first introduced in 1977 and named for its rounded body shape. Yamaha built the Broad Bass specifically to break into the US market after its earlier SB and PB basses had sold almost exclusively in Japan, going as far as having West Coast session players test prototypes and give direct feedback during development. The original BB1200 launched as the premium model alongside the BB1000 and BB800, all sharing a single reverse-mounted split-coil pickup similar to a Fender Precision's, and a year later the BB2000 added a Jazz-Bass-style "blade" pickup at the bridge. The BB734A carries that same market-tested, US-focused design philosophy into a nearly 50-year-old model line still built around giving players a familiar, dependable workhorse rather than a niche specialty instrument.
