The Yamaha TRBX605FM is a 5-string active/passive bass with a flamed maple top over an alder body, dual YGD H5 humbuckers and a 3-band EQ, built on a lineage that deliberately merges two older Yamaha bass families rather than descending from the brand's famous Broad Bass line.

About the Yamaha TRBX605FM

Built on a 34-inch scale with a bolt-on 5-piece maple/mahogany neck and a flamed maple top over an alder body, the TRBX605FM pairs a rosewood fingerboard (23.625-inch radius, 24 medium frets, offset dot inlays) with a 43mm urea nut. Two YGD H5 Alnico V humbuckers at neck and bridge feed a flexible electronics package: master volume, a pickup balancer, master tone in passive mode, a passive/active switch, and a 3-band active EQ with an easy-access battery compartment and LED low-battery warning. Hardware includes a high-mass die-cast bridge with 18mm string spacing and closed die-cast tuners, with a straight string-pull design intended to give balanced tension feel and better tuning stability. It's offered in gloss finishes (Translucent Black, Dark Red Burst) and satin finishes (Matte Amber, Natural Satin), strung from the factory at .045-.130.

Sound character of the Yamaha TRBX605FM

The alder-and-flamed-maple combination delivers punch, bite and sustain, with active mode producing deeply rounded, billowy lows even on the low B string and passive mode offering a classically warm, punchy and fat tone - overall described as crystal clear and tight with a wide range of usable sounds.

Warm Punchy Full-bodied Resonant

What owners of the Yamaha TRBX605FM say

Sentiment skews heavily positive, anchored by a review that explicitly states it found no real drawbacks and calls the bass simply a solid value at its price point. The praise concentrates on versatility between active and passive modes and on build quality that feels more expensive than the price tag suggests. The one counterpoint worth weighing - a separate assessment of the YGD pickups as somewhat lacking in punch and definition - doesn't seem to be a widely shared complaint, but it's a useful reminder that tastes vary on pickup character even on an otherwise well-regarded instrument.

Playability & handling of the Yamaha TRBX605FM

A detailed review describes the bass as lightweight and comfortable with well-spaced strings and frets, praising the straight string-pull design for a balanced tension feel and improved tuning stability - though notes above the 21st fret come across as thinner and harder to reach despite the full 24-fret range. In active mode, the reviewer reports deeply rounded, billowy lows even on the low B string, while passive mode delivers a classically warm, punchy and fat character that takes pedals and effects well. That same reviewer states they "couldn't find any real cons," calling it simply a solid bass for the money at its roughly $650 price point. A more critical voice elsewhere pushes back on one specific point, finding the YGD pickups a bit short on punch and definition - a useful counterweight to the otherwise glowing consensus.

Recommended accessories & strings for the Yamaha TRBX605FM

The easy-access battery compartment with an LED low-battery warning is the main practical feature to keep in mind for the active electronics - a spare 9V battery is worth having on hand. No specific case or gig bag is consistently listed as included, so that's worth checking with the specific retailer.

The history of the Yamaha TRBX605FM

The five-string flagship of Yamaha's TRBX600 tier, the TRBX605FM adds a low B string and a flamed maple top over the entry TRBX models.

About Yamaha as a manufacturer

Launched in 2013, the TRBX line is a deliberate fusion of two older Yamaha bass families rather than a descendant of the brand's famous 1977 Broad Bass (BB) series: the TRB line, introduced in 1991 as an upscale departure from the BB design, and the RBX line, dating back to 1986. That dual lineage explains why a mid-priced instrument like the TRBX605FM can deliver features reviewers describe as unexpectedly professional for the price - it draws on roughly three decades of two separate Yamaha bass-design traditions rather than starting from a simplified student format.
