About the Yamaha YEV-104

The YEV-104's most distinctive feature is its shape: rather than a conventional violin silhouette or an abstract electric-violin frame, Yamaha designed it with continuity between front and back inspired by a Mobius strip, built from a 5-layer oil-finished walnut frame combined with carefully selected maple, mahogany and spruce. Despite the unusual shape, it retains the same body dimensions as an acoustic violin and accepts standard shoulder rests, chin rests and tailpieces.

The pickup is drawn directly from Yamaha's professional Silent Violin series rather than a simplified budget design, producing what Yamaha describes as a smooth, organic and warm tone. Output is entirely passive - no battery, no onboard preamp, no headphone circuitry - just a simple 1/4-inch jack, a deliberately minimal approach matching the clean aesthetic of the instrument's body design. It's a standard 4-string model available in natural wood or black finish.

Sound character of the Yamaha YEV-104

Yamaha's YEV series uses a partial, sculpted body shape (not a full acoustic chamber) around a piezo pickup, giving slightly more natural low-mid presence than a bare solid-body electric violin while still delivering the clean, bright, direct signal typical of piezo-equipped stage instruments.

The history of the Yamaha YEV-104

The YEV-104 represents Yamaha's attempt to give an electric violin genuine sculptural design merit rather than treating the body as a purely functional afterthought to the electronics, while still drawing on the company's established Silent Violin pickup technology for tone quality.
