What does ToneIndex do for you?
See the real market price.
We scan multiple platforms and dealer listings to show you what an instrument actually costs right now — so you can tell at a glance whether an offer is fair, cheap, or overpriced.
How hard is this instrument to find?
Some instruments are everywhere. Others rarely turn up. We show you how often a given model is currently listed — so you know whether it pays to wait or whether you should grab it now.
Your instrument. Your dealer. Your call.
We bring matching listings from different platforms together in one place. Once you've found your instrument, you decide where to buy it.
The market for used musical instruments is scattered: listings are spread across classifieds sites, specialized marketplaces, auctions and countless individual dealer websites. If you want to know whether a price is fair, or how hard a particular model actually is to find, you would normally have to search several platforms by hand and compare listings one by one.
That's exactly where we come in: we're independent of any single seller and bring together listings from multiple marketplaces and dealers in one place - objectively, with no sales interest of our own, and focused exclusively on musical instruments. For every instrument we link directly to the cheapest listing currently in our database, rate its rarity on a scale of 1-10, and break down price, technical specs and history. From beginner guitars to concert grand pianos, our wide instrument range currently spans 24 categories.
Using the site is completely free, quick and requires no registration - getting an estimate takes seconds. Our service costs you nothing extra: we don't charge you a commission and we always show transparently where a listing comes from. Our goal is a fast, objective assessment that both buyers and sellers can rely on.

Questions that come up regularly when searching for instruments on our site.
The most important answers about pricing, data and how this site works.
1 How up to date are the prices?
Price ranges are based on publicly available listings. Our systems search the marketplaces daily and update prices accordingly. The figures are indicative, not a guarantee of the price actually achievable - the real sale price always also depends on the instrument's actual condition and the negotiation between buyer and seller.
2 How is the price range calculated?
We gather listings for the same or a very similar model and derive a range from the cheapest to the most expensive price currently observed. The price-history chart on every instrument page additionally shows how that range has developed over recent weeks.
3 What does the 1-10 rarity scale mean?
It shows how often a given model currently appears on the used market. 1 means very rare, 10 means very commonly available - at low values it can be worth acting quickly when a matching listing shows up.
4 Do you sell the instruments yourselves?
No. We bring together listings from different providers to help you find the right instrument, and link out to the respective marketplaces and dealers - the actual purchase, payment and shipping all happen there, not on our site. Our site is funded through affiliate links: using our links when you buy helps support us, so we can keep offering this service to you for free and keep improving it - at no extra cost to you.
5 Are the buy links affiliate links?
Some links are affiliate links. That means: if a purchase results from clicking one, we may earn a commission from the respective provider - at no extra cost to you. This revenue is important for funding our site, so we can keep offering the service for free and keep expanding it. See our privacy policy for details.
6 Can I get my own instrument estimated?
Yes - use "Estimate My Instrument" to enter brand, model and optionally the year, and get an instant automated price estimate based on comparable listings in our database. No email address or account is required.
7 What if the instrument I'm looking for isn't listed?
Your search is recorded anonymously so we can see which instruments are specifically being searched for and keep expanding our database accordingly. It's worth checking back and searching for the instrument again in a few days - we research continuously, and the database is updated every few days.
8 Where does the data come from?
From a wide variety of sources, which we collect, verify and process into a consistent format automatically - including technical specs and historical background for every model. That way you don't have to search across different sites yourself: we bring the information together from various data sources and present it to you clearly structured and sorted in one place.
