About the Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Special 5 H
The "H" in StingRay Special 5 H denotes a single humbucking pickup near the bridge, the original StingRay layout dating back to 1976, as opposed to the HH variant that adds a second humbucker. On the five-string version this single pickup is built with wider pole-piece spacing to keep output even across the extra low B string, preserving the punchy, humbucker-driven growl the StingRay is known for rather than the more scooped tone a second neck-position pickup would introduce.
The StingRay Special generation, introduced in 2019, revised the classic StingRay body with a sculpted neck heel for easier upper-fret access and roasted maple neck options, while replacing the earlier 2-band or 3-band preamp with a redesigned active circuit offering more headroom and a wider EQ sweep. Built in the US alongside Ernie Ball Music Man's other core models, the StingRay Special 5 H sits as the modern, single-pickup five-string reference point in a family that also includes four-string and HH-pickup variants.

Sound character of the Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Special 5 H
The single bridge humbucker (the 'H' designation) is the original 1976 StingRay layout, giving the classic punchy, growling midrange voice, as opposed to the HH variant's added neck humbucker for a warmer blended tone - on this five-string version the pickup uses wider pole spacing to keep output balanced across the low B.
