The Korg D1 is a speaker-less, slim-profile 88-key digital stage piano built around the same RH3 hammer-action keyboard found in Korg's higher-end instruments, trading onboard speakers and a USB port for a lighter, more portable build aimed squarely at gigging musicians.

About the Korg D1 Slimline

The D1's 88-key (A0-C8) RH3 keyboard offers five selectable touch control types, driving 30 sounds arranged in 10x3 banks through stereo PCM sound generation at up to 120-note polyphony, with Brilliance, Reverb and Chorus effects each adjustable across three levels. Its defining design choice is depth: the cabinet is built to just 26cm (about 10.24"), the minimum depth Korg found still allows comfortable playing, and the piano skips onboard speakers entirely to keep weight down to 16kg. Connectivity covers line out (L/mono, R), MIDI in/out, headphones and a damper pedal jack - notably, there's no USB port, so a separate MIDI-to-USB interface is needed for computer use. A built-in metronome offers tempo, time signature, accent, sound and volume controls, and tuning options include transpose and 9 temperament types. It runs on a 9V DC adapter at just 1.5W, and ships with a damper pedal and music rest included.

Sound character of the Korg D1 Slimline

A solid base piano tone with genuine expressive range across touch dynamics, avoiding the flat, variation-starved sound reviewers often flag in similarly priced digital pianos, projected cleanly through line out or headphones given the lack of onboard speakers.

Warm Resonant Full-bodied Modern/Hi-Fi

What owners of the Korg D1 Slimline say

Reviews across multiple independent sites are consistently positive, with the RH3 keybed and the expressive, nuanced piano tone as the two standout strengths, alongside praise for how light and road-ready the instrument feels for touring musicians. The recurring criticism is the missing USB port, and some reviewers note the lack of onboard speakers as a minor consideration for anyone wanting a true all-in-one practice instrument rather than a stage tool paired with external sound. Overall it's framed as a strong, solid-everywhere choice for gigging players rather than the most versatile or feature-complete option at its price.

Playability & handling of the Korg D1 Slimline

The biggest selling point by far is the top-of-the-line RH3 keybed - reviewers consistently describe the action as feeling great, with even, balanced keys that land in a comfortable middle ground between too stiff and too light. A common complaint about digital pianos in this mid-range price bracket is a decent base piano sound that lacks real variation under different touch, but reviewers specifically note the D1 avoids that trap, letting players clearly articulate emotional nuance through touch dynamics rather than hitting a flat ceiling. Skipping onboard speakers isn't treated as a real downside given the target audience of performing musicians who'll run it through a PA anyway - instead it's framed as a deliberate tradeoff that keeps the instrument lighter and easier to haul to gigs. The one consistently flagged limitation is the missing USB port, which means computer connectivity requires an extra MIDI-to-USB adapter that competitors in this price range often build in directly.

Recommended accessories & strings for the Korg D1 Slimline

A damper pedal and music rest ship included, covering the basics for both practice and performance. Since there's no USB port, players planning to connect the D1 to a computer or DAW will need to budget separately for a MIDI-to-USB interface, and since there are no onboard speakers, a PA system or external amp is necessary for live use.

The history of the Korg D1 Slimline

Korg built the D1 Slimline as a speaker-free stage piano for gigging and studio musicians needing portable, genuine hammer-action touch.

About Korg as a manufacturer

Korg traces its roots to a Tokyo nightclub, where founders Tsutomu Kato and Tadashi Osanai met after Osanai, an accomplished accordionist, began performing regularly at Kato's club accompanied by a rhythm machine - a partnership that led them to found the company in 1962 and release the Doncamatic DA-20, the world's first disc-rotation auto-rhythm machine, in 1963. The KORG name itself came later, combining both founders' initials with "RG" for a planned push into the organ market. The D1 shares its RH3 keyboard action directly with Korg's C1 Air home digital piano and its professional Kronos 2 workstation, another case of Korg deploying the same core keybed technology across radically different price points and use cases rather than reserving it for flagship instruments alone.
