About the Korg LP-380U

The LP-380U's 88-key RH3 (Real Weighted Hammer Action 3) keyboard reproduces a grand piano's graduated feel - heavier in the bass, progressively lighter toward the treble - with improved response to repeated keystrokes so fast passages come through without losing expression. Its 30 onboard sounds include five acoustic pianos, sampled with four velocity layers per note and resonance plus mechanical noise simulation, played back at up to 120-voice polyphony and shaped by Brilliance, Chorus and Reverb effects. Two 22-watt amplifiers (44W total) drive speakers positioned beneath the keyboard for sound that reviewers say seems to emanate from within the instrument itself. The key addition over the previous LP-380 is a USB-B MIDI port for computer connectivity, alongside Duet Mode, Split/Layer, temperament adjustment, transpose and tuning controls. All three concert-grand pedal functions are supported, including realistic half-pedaling on the damper and soft pedals, and two headphone jacks allow silent practice. At just 26cm deep and 37kg with its stand, it's available in black, white and rosewood-grain finishes.

Sound character of the Korg LP-380U

Acoustic piano samples with four velocity layers and resonance/mechanical noise simulation pair with notably warm, characterful Rhodes- and Wurlitzer-style electric piano tones, all projected through a powerful 44-watt speaker system that makes the sound feel like it comes from within the instrument.

Warm Full-bodied Smooth Modern/Hi-Fi

What owners of the Korg LP-380U say

Reviews are largely positive, with the electric piano voices and the unusually powerful 44-watt speaker system as the most consistently praised strengths, alongside the instrument's overall approachability. The recurring critique centers on build quality feeling a step behind comparable Yamaha Arius or Casio Privia models, and the absence of onboard MIDI recording stands out as a missing convenience at this price point. One review's 4.4-out-of-5 score reflects strong but not category-leading competitiveness given how crowded this segment is.

Playability & handling of the Korg LP-380U

The LP-380U is aimed at style-conscious beginners who want great sound and playability rather than sequencers or auto-accompaniment features. Overall sound quality draws strong praise, but the Rhodes-style and Wurlitzer-type electric piano voices are singled out repeatedly as the standout - one review is titled specifically around how the electric piano tones steal the show, with reviewers crediting their warmth and character as best-in-class for a furniture-style digital piano. The 44-watt amplification system, the highest output in its class, reinforces that impression by making the sound feel like it's coming from inside the instrument rather than from separate speaker units. The RH3 action's graduated weight is praised for mimicking a real acoustic grand convincingly, and the instrument is noted as one of the most approachable digital pianos around, with no annoying wait time after power-on. On the downside, some reviewers feel the build quality doesn't quite match comparable Yamaha Arius or Casio Privia models, and the lack of onboard MIDI recording stands out as a missing feature at this price point - one review lands on a 4.4-out-of-5 verdict specifically because of stiff competition in the category.

Recommended accessories & strings for the Korg LP-380U

The new USB-B MIDI port is the headline practical addition over the older LP-380, opening up straightforward computer and DAW connectivity without extra hardware. Two headphone jacks support duet practice without a splitter, and a properly sized bench makes a real difference for comfort and posture during longer practice sessions.

The history of the Korg LP-380U

Korg's LP-380U targets buyers wanting a modern, space-conscious home piano design without sacrificing genuine hammer-action touch.

About Korg as a manufacturer

Korg's origin story starts a long way from digital pianos: founders Tsutomu Kato and Tadashi Osanai met when Osanai, an accomplished accordionist, performed regularly at the nightclub Kato ran, backed by a Wurlitzer Sideman rhythm machine. That pairing led the two to found the company in 1962 and, in 1963, release the Doncamatic DA-20, the world's first disk-rotary electric auto-rhythm machine. The company later took the name KORG while marketing an organ, combining the first letters of both founders' names with "RG" for their planned organ-market focus. The LP-380U reflects a pattern seen across Korg's lineup: rather than redesigning a proven instrument from scratch, the company iterates on it - here adding USB-MIDI connectivity and performance features like Duet Mode and Split/Layer onto the well-regarded LP-380 foundation rather than replacing it outright.
