The Roland FP-60X is an 88-key digital piano built around Roland's SuperNATURAL sound engine and PHA-4 Standard keyboard, with a dedicated 26-watt speaker enclosure and onboard mic/vocal effects that push it toward performing musicians more than true portability.
About the Roland FP-60X
At the core of the FP-60X is Roland's SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine with 256-note polyphony, backed by a sound library of 16 piano, 18 electric piano, 18 organ, 27 string/pad and 279 synth/other tones including 8 drum sets and an SFX set. The 88-key PHA-4 Standard keyboard adds escapement and an ivory-feel surface for a more authentic touch. Sound comes through 8 x 12cm speakers arranged as two separately enclosed speaker units rated at 13W x 2 (about 26W total), a design meant to improve bass response and resonance compared to speakers simply mounted in the main cabinet. Ambience processing covers Studio, Lounge, Concert Hall and Cathedral types across 11 depth settings, plus 8 'My Stage' presets, and a 3D Ambience mode specifically shapes the headphone experience. Connectivity includes Bluetooth 3.0 audio and Bluetooth 4.0 MIDI, a USB audio/MIDI interface for computer recording, dual headphone outputs, and a built-in microphone input with vocal effects. A Piano Designer function allows deeper tone customization. At 1,291 x 344 x 126mm and 19.3kg including the music rest, it's compatible with the optional KSC-72 stand and KPD-90 pedal unit for a more permanent setup.

Sound character of the Roland FP-60X
The SuperNATURAL engine delivers a rich, expressive piano tone described as rivaling acoustic instruments, while the separately enclosed 26-watt speaker system adds a notably full, resonant bass response that belies the instrument's relatively compact cabinet.
What owners of the Roland FP-60X say
Customer feedback leans positive overall, with the strongest praise going to sound quality, key action and build quality. The most common point of friction is a mismatch between expectations set by the word "portable" and the reality of a nearly 20kg, 1.29-meter-wide instrument - some owners feel the name oversells how easy it is to move around, even as they remain satisfied with what it delivers once it's set up.
Playability & handling of the Roland FP-60X
Reviewers consistently credit the SuperNATURAL engine with a rich, expressive tone that rivals acoustic pianos, and the PHA-4 keyboard with delivering an authentic playing feel, while 256-note polyphony keeps complex passages from dropping notes. The recurring critique, though, targets the "portable" label itself: at 19.3kg and over 1.29m wide, independent reviewers note the FP-60X isn't genuinely portable the way the smaller FP-30X is, and one widely cited review bluntly calls it an 'awkward middle brother' sitting between a true portable model and a full stage piano without clearly excelling at either role. That said, the weight is generally framed as an acceptable trade-off given the quality of the built-in 26-watt speaker system and the improved control layout over the previous FP-60, both of which lean toward performing musicians who want real speakers on stage rather than players who need to carry the instrument often.
Recommended accessories & strings for the Roland FP-60X
The optional KSC-72 stand and KPD-90 three-pedal unit turn the FP-60X into a more furniture-like setup for a fixed practice space, while the dual headphone outputs let two people practice together without needing an external splitter.

About Roland as a manufacturer
Roland Corporation was founded in April 1972 by Ikutaro Kakehashi in the Sumiyoshi ward of Osaka with roughly $107,000 in starting capital. Kakehashi, who had no formal musical training himself, had already founded Ace Tone in 1960 to build electronic organs and early drum machines before leaving to start Roland. Where rivals like Moog and ARP chased professional musicians and academics, Kakehashi deliberately aimed at amateurs and hobbyists, prioritizing miniaturization, affordability and simplicity - a philosophy that shows up in the FP-60X's dense feature set packed into a relatively approachable package. With former Ace Tone staff and much of his own savings, the young company shipped its first product, the TR-77 drum machine, just 90 days after founding. Roland relocated its headquarters to Hamamatsu in 2005, putting it in the same city as fellow piano makers Yamaha and Kawai.
