A carved F-style with an unusual electronics feature: a Shadow Germany-designed pickup with a separate coil per string pair and individually adjustable output trimpots, solving the uneven string-pair volume that plagues most amplified mandolins.
About the Epiphone MM-50E
The MM-50E's body is standard Epiphone F-style: carved solid spruce top with flamed maple back, sides and neck, rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, finished in a thin hand-rubbed polyoil intended to let the top vibrate more freely than a thick lacquer coat would. What sets it apart is the electronics: developed with Shadow Germany, the Quad NanoMag pickup uses samarium-cobalt magnets and gives each of the four string pairs its own separate coil rather than one pickup sensing all eight strings together, with over 85dB of crosstalk separation between courses.
Each string pair's output level is independently adjustable via four trimpots accessible from the top of the pickguard with a small screwdriver - directly addressing the common problem of amplified mandolins where some string pairs come through louder than others. The pickup itself slides along a track, moving toward the bridge for a brighter tone or toward the neck for warmth. Controls are master volume, treble and bass, powered by a coin-cell battery in an easy-access compartment on the pickguard.

Sound character of the Epiphone MM-50E
The carved solid spruce top and thin polyoil finish (rather than thick lacquer) let the top vibrate more freely, giving a bright, resonant carved-F-style tone acoustically; amplified, the separate per-course coils and sliding pickup position (toward the bridge for brightness, toward the neck for warmth) give genuinely adjustable tonal character rather than one fixed amplified sound.

The history of the Epiphone MM-50E
Epiphone marketed the MM-50E specifically as the first mandolin allowing per-string-pair output balancing, a genuine engineering response to a longstanding complaint among gigging mandolinists about inconsistent amplified tone across the instrument's four courses.
