Reed strength is graded on a numeric scale (roughly 1.5 to 5 depending on the brand), and it is one of the few setup choices a beginner controls directly, independent of the saxophone itself.

  • Most teachers recommend starting on a soft reed, typically around strength 2 to 2.5, paired with a beginner-friendly, medium-close mouthpiece.
  • Soft reeds respond easily and forgive an unsteady embouchure, which matters most in the first weeks of playing.
  • A reed that is too hard from the start makes it harder to produce a clear tone at all, which can be discouraging before basic embouchure control is built.

As embouchure strength and control improve, many players gradually move up in reed strength over months, not days. There is no fixed "correct" strength to graduate to - it depends on the mouthpiece being used and personal preference, and changing mouthpieces later usually means re-testing reed strength from scratch rather than assuming the old number still fits.
