About the Fender Paramount PM-180E

The PM-180E is part of Fender's Paramount Bluegrass Collection, the brand's push into acoustic instrument categories it has traditionally left to specialists. Construction is laminated rather than solid: a laminated spruce top over laminated mahogany back and sides with parallel tone-bar bracing, a more affordable but less resonant build method than the hand-carved solid tops on Eastman or Kentucky instruments in a similar price range. The A-style body carries a 3-ply black pickguard and snowflake position inlays on a walnut fingerboard - an unusual wood choice, since most mandolins use rosewood or ebony.

What sets it apart electronically is a Fishman Implant Mandolin pickup built into the design rather than retrofitted, feeding a straightforward output without external controls on some versions. The neck is maple in a V shape with satin finish, at a 13.9-inch scale and 1.12-inch nut, with open-gear tuners with pearloid buttons and a walnut bridge to match the fingerboard.

Sound character of the Fender Paramount PM-180E

Laminated spruce and mahogany vibrate less freely than the solid, hand-carved tops on Eastman or Kentucky mandolins, giving a more subdued, less resonant acoustic voice with mahogany's characteristic midrange warmth; the walnut fingerboard and bridge add a touch of softness to the attack compared to the harder rosewood or ebony used on most mandolins.

The history of the Fender Paramount PM-180E

Fender launched the Paramount line specifically to enter acoustic guitar, banjo and mandolin markets under its own name rather than through an acquired brand, positioning the PM-180E as an accessible bluegrass mandolin for guitarists exploring the instrument for the first time.
