An open-hole intermediate flute that carries Yamaha's power-forged keys and neoprene bumpers over from its professional engineering practices, aimed at a student ready to move beyond a closed-hole beginner instrument.
About the Yamaha YFL-261
The YFL-261's open-hole, offset-G keywork over a durable nickel-silver body marks the technical step up from Yamaha's closed-hole beginner flutes, asking more precise finger placement in exchange for the added tonal flexibility open holes provide. Power-forged keys increase durability compared to cast keywork, and neoprene bumpers replace traditional cork specifically to achieve a tighter, longer-lasting fit against the body than cork alone typically holds.
Its double flare taper headjoint with an undercut, beveled embouchure hole - shared across much of Yamaha's student and intermediate range - gives a warm, rich tone and excellent response, while carefully considered key dimensions and angles keep the instrument comfortable for the same smaller-handed players Yamaha designs its beginner flutes for, even as the overall instrument steps up in capability.

Sound character of the Yamaha YFL-261
The tone here is still primarily shaped by its silver-plated nickel-silver tube, so it keeps the brighter, more direct character typical of plated Yamaha flutes rather than gaining the warmth of a sterling-silver headjoint model like the 381. Its open-hole, power-forged keys add tonal shading options over closed-hole models such as the 221/225, but the C foot (rather than a B foot) keeps it lighter and gives less low-register resonance than step-up models with an extended tube.
