Yamaha's beginner Bb clarinet built from a resin bell designed to lighten the instrument and add a resonance chamber that helps young players find secure intonation in the lower register from their first weeks of playing.
About the Yamaha YCL-255
The YCL-255 uses a matte ABS resin body with silver-plated, nickel-plated keys and a 65mm barrel, paired with a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece - a proven beginner setup rather than an unfamiliar mouthpiece requiring its own adjustment period. Compared to its predecessor, the YCL-250, Yamaha removed the bell ring and added an adjustable thumb rest with a neck-strap loop, two changes aimed directly at reducing hand and neck fatigü during a student's earliest practice sessions.
The solid resin bell was engineered as a genuine acoustic improvement rather than a cost-saving substitute for wood - its lighter weight improves response, and its resonance chamber specifically helps intonation and projection in the notes beginners find hardest to control.

Sound character of the Yamaha YCL-255
The ABS resin body gives the YCL-255 a lighter, brighter, somewhat more open sound than a wood clarinet, which is the point: the reduced weight and the bell's resonance chamber were engineered specifically to make the lower register speak easily and stay in tune for beginners who can't yet compensate with embouchure control. It won't have the dark, harmonically dense core of a Grenadilla instrument, but it responds quickly and consistently.
