A discontinued Japanese professional clarinet built entirely from hand-selected, seasoned Grenadilla wood, offering a genuine alternative to the French professional makers at a comparatively accessible price when new.
About the Yamaha YCL-650
The YCL-650 carries Böhm-system keywork across 17 keys and 6 rings, machined from nickel silver and finished in silver plate, mounted on a body, barrel and bell all made from carefully seasoned and hand-finished Grenadilla. Its tone holes are tapered inset type with tapered undercut, hand-worked for precise intonation rather than machine-cut alone, and the bell includes an added resonance chamber specifically engineered to improve projection and low-register intonation.
It ships with a Yamaha 4CM hard rubber mouthpiece, silver-plated ligature, blue steel needle springs, and Lucien deluxe double-skin pads - a complete professional-tier package that made it a respected choice among players who wanted an alternative to the dominant French makers without sacrificing build quality.

Sound character of the Yamaha YCL-650
An all-Grenadilla body carried through barrel and bell gives the YCL-650 a dense, warm fundamental with strong harmonic content, and the added bell resonance chamber specifically targets stronger projection and cleaner intonation in the low register where cheaper bass-heavy passages often turn muddy. Hand-worked, tapered-undercut tone holes keep that richness even and centered rather than uneven across the break.
