About the Epiphone MB-100

The MB-100 keeps construction deliberately simple: a mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, and a Remo head, without a resonator or a distinct cast tone ring - the sound comes primarily from the wood and head tension rather than metal tone-shaping hardware. That open-back simplicity keeps weight down to 4.6 lbs, among the lightest 5-string banjos on the market, and reduces cost significantly compared to resonator instruments.

The neck carries 22 frets at a 26.25-inch scale and 1.25-inch nut width, with a maple bridge topped in ebony and premium nickel tuning machines with white buttons. As an entry instrument it's positioned for players learning old-time or clawhammer styles that don't require a resonator's directional projection, or as a compact secondary instrument for traveling musicians.

Sound character of the Epiphone MB-100

The MB-100 is a fully open-back, all-mahogany banjo with no metal tone ring at all - the head sits directly on the wood rim, producing the soft, dry, woody 'plunk' associated with old-time and clawhammer playing rather than the loud metallic ring of a bluegrass resonator banjo. Its light weight (under 5 lbs) reinforces the intimate, low-volume character.

The history of the Epiphone MB-100

Epiphone, historically a guitar and mandolin brand under the Gibson umbrella, offers the MB-100 as a low-cost entry point specifically for guitarists and general beginners exploring banjo for the first time rather than dedicated bluegrass performers.
