About the Hohner Erica

Where Hohner's three-row Panther and Corona diatonics are built for louder, more harmonically complex playing, the Erica strips down to two rows of 21 treble buttons and just 8 bass/chord buttons - a simpler, more limited harmonic palette suited to melody-focused folk styles rather than dense chord accompaniment. Two sets of treble reeds and a single tone color keep the electronics simple; there are no register switches to operate mid-tune.

At roughly 11 x 6 inches and 6.6 lbs, it's genuinely pocket-portable compared to any piano accordion or three-row diatonic, with a solid wooden housing under a celluloid finish. Available in G/C or A/D key combinations, it's aimed squarely at sea shanty, English country dance, cumbia and American old-time folk musicians who need an easy-to-carry instrument for informal sessions rather than a stage-volume performance accordion.

Sound character of the Hohner Erica

With only 21 treble and 8 bass buttons across two reed sets, its small reed block and low air volume give a thin, light tone suited to solo folk-session melody lines rather than the loud, full-band projection of a three-row Tex-Mex diatonic - portability and playability come at the cost of tonal weight.

The history of the Hohner Erica

The Erica has long served as many folk musicians' first diatonic button accordion specifically because of its small size and simplified two-row layout, letting players learn diatonic technique before considering a larger three-row instrument.
