About the Washburn M1SDLB

The M1SDLB pairs a solid, carved European spruce top with maple back and sides under an oval sound hole, using quarter-sawn Sitka spruce for the internal bracing - quarter-sawn wood resists warping better under string tension than flat-sawn bracing, a detail more common on higher-end instruments than typical entry mandolins. The rosette and nut are ABS synthetic rather than wood or bone, a cost-saving substitution that doesn't affect structural function.

The maple neck and engineered-wood fingerboard carry 20 frets and dot inlays, at a notably wide 1 1/4-inch nut and 13.75-inch scale - wider than most mandolins, which some players find easier for chord work even if it departs from traditional mandolin proportions. Gold-finished die-cast tuners with pearloid buttons and a gloss black finish set it apart cosmetically from Washburn's natural-finish Americana mandolins, marketed as part of the same 8-string bluegrass standard tuning family.

Sound character of the Washburn M1SDLB

The oval sound hole gives the mellower, more evenly-radiating voice typical of pre-bluegrass mandolins, but maple back and sides push it brighter and louder than the mahogany-bodied oval-hole mandolins in this comparison - the quarter-sawn bracing mainly helps long-term stability under string tension rather than changing the tone itself.

The history of the Washburn M1SDLB

Washburn's Americana series applies the brand's guitar-building scale to mandolins and banjos, aimed at guitarists and folk-adjacent players picking up a mandolin as a secondary instrument rather than dedicated bluegrass specialists.
