A beginner clarinet from a maker known for premium professional instruments, using a proprietary synthetic body engineered specifically for consistent resonance and lightweight durability rather than adapting a generic student design.
About the Backun Alpha
At roughly 656 grams, the Alpha is built around Backun's own synthetic material and poly-cylindrical bore, paired with drop-forged, triple-strike nickel-plated keywork and water-resistant black Valentino pads that hold up better to inconsistent classroom humidity than traditional felt or cork alternatives. Slightly larger tenons than most standard clarinets mean non-Alpha barrels and bells may need adjustment to fit - a deliberate design choice tied to Backun's specific acoustic goals rather than a compatibility oversight.
It comes complete with a mouthpiece kit built around Backun's own Protege Bb mouthpiece, cap, ligature and reed rather than a generic starter mouthpiece, alongside a hard shell case - reflecting the same attention to ergonomics and comfort for young players that the company applies to its professional-tier instruments.

Sound character of the Backun Alpha
Unlike beginner clarinets that simply mold a generic ABS body, the Alpha uses Backun's own proprietary synthetic material and poly-cylindrical bore engineered specifically for consistent resonance, giving it a rounder, more even tone than typical entry-level plastic clarinets - brighter and less complex overall than a solid-Grenadilla instrument, but more controlled than a basic student model.

The history of the Backun Alpha
Backun brought its acoustic design background down to the beginner market with the Alpha, aiming to give first-time students a more considered instrument than a typical entry-level clarinet.
