Backun Protege
Price: 1.350 EUR – 1.350 EUR
Availability: 0/10 (Very rare)
An intermediate clarinet from a maker better known for premium custom instruments, bringing drop-forged silver-plated keywork and Backun's own bell and barrel designs down to a step-up price point.
About the Backun Protege
The Protege uses a premium, unstained exotic hardwood body - Grenadilla or cocobolo depending on the finish chosen - over a poly-cylindrical bore, with drop-forged and hardened keywork carrying Backun's triple-strike silver plating, a process the company otherwise reserves for its professional lines. Custom black leather pads and traditional flat springs complete a build that leans on Backun's acoustic research rather than simply scaling down a beginner design.
Its New Traditional barrel and dedicated Backun bell are the same accessory designs the company sells separately to upgrade other brands' clarinets, here built directly into the instrument - a signal that Backun considers barrel and bell tuning central to how a clarinet responds, not an afterthought bolted onto a generic body.

Sound character of the Backun Protege
Built from solid Grenadilla or cocobolo rather than a composite body, the Protege carries the dense, warm, resonant tone of premium wood clarinets. Backun's own New Traditional barrel and bell - the same parts the company sells separately to upgrade other makers' instruments - are tuned specifically to open up resonance and smooth the response across registers.
