A wood-bodied student clarinet built from unstained Grenadilla, giving beginners the tonal warmth of a real wood instrument together with a bore engineered to develop a controlled, mature sound rather than an overly free tone.
About the Selmer CL201 (SCL201N)
Unlike the resin-bodied 1400 further down Selmer's beginner range, the CL201 uses genuine unstained Grenadilla wood with drop-forged nickel-silver keys and straight-cut tone holes, aimed at students ready for the extra step up in build quality and tone that real wood provides. Its medium 0.573-inch complex bore intentionally gives slight resistance, a design choice meant to help a student develop a well-controlled, focused embouchure rather than the overly easy response of a large-bore instrument.
Undercut tone holes give a smooth, even scale with better intonation control across registers, while a hard rubber mouthpiece and wide pinky-key design - accommodating smaller student hands - complete a package built domestically in Elkhart, Indiana, alongside its 1400 stablemate.
