An entry-level Eastman student violin built in China with Chinese spruce and maple, distinguishing itself with a European maple bridge and Despiau fittings usually found on pricier instruments.
About the Eastman VL80 (Samuel Eastman)
Sold under Eastman's Samuel Eastman sub-line, the VL80 uses Chinese spruce for the top and Chinese maple for the back and ribs rather than the European tonewoods on Eastman's higher-numbered VL200 and up models - a cost-driven material choice at the entry tier. Genuine hand-inlaid purfling and a Stradivari body pattern carry over from Eastman's broader construction standards even at this price point.
What sets the VL80 apart from many similarly-priced student violins is its professionally fitted European maple Despiau bridge - Despiau being a recognized French bridge-blank maker used across many higher-end violins - rather than a generic stamped bridge. Ebony tuning pegs, an ebony chinrest and high-gloss varnish round out the fittings, with the complete outfit including a deluxe thermoplastic case, a K. Holtz fiberglass bow, shoulder pad and rosin.

Sound character of the Eastman VL80 (Samuel Eastman)
Eastman's entry VL80 uses solid spruce and maple rather than laminate, giving it a warmer, more resonant tone than typical laminate-body student violins at a similar price, while still being a factory-graduated instrument rather than an individually carved workshop violin.
