The standard, non-Special StingRay configuration: solid ash body, roasted maple neck, and Music Man's alnico humbucker through an 18-volt active 3-band preamp - the original design that introduced onboard EQ to production bass guitars.
About the Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4 H
The StingRay 4H keeps the classic StingRay recipe close to its original form: a bolt-on solid ash body in a high-gloss finish with the model's iconic oval pickguard, paired with a roasted maple neck carrying 22 high-profile, wide stainless steel frets on a rosewood fingerboard at the standard 34-inch scale and a 1 11/16-inch nut width. Hardware includes open-gear tuners and Music Man's own compensated bridge with vintage-style steel saddles, in chrome with knurled dome control knobs.
The pickup is Music Man's alnico-powered humbucker, run through an active 18-volt preamp with 3-band EQ (volume, treble, mid, bass), giving significantly more tonal shaping range than a passive bass. A 3+1 tuning key layout on the headstock is one of the model's recognizable visual details alongside the pickguard shape.

Sound character of the Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4 H
The standard StingRay's single bridge-position humbucker and active 2- or 3-band preamp are responsible for its punchy, aggressive, midrange-forward growl - a tone built around boosted midrange presence rather than a scooped, hi-fi voicing.

The history of the Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4 H
The original Music Man StingRay, released in 1976 with input from Leo Fender, was the first mass-produced bass to feature onboard active electronics, a genuine innovation at the time that let players shape their tone at the instrument rather than relying solely on amp EQ. The 4H designation refers to the standard four-string, single-humbucker configuration as distinct from the later StingRay Special and multi-pickup variants, and it remains one of the most widely imitated bass designs in the industry.
