About the Korg microKORG

The microKORG's virtual analog synthesis engine digitally models classic analog circuit behavior rather than using actual analog components, giving it the character and flexibility of analog subtractive synthesis at a fraction of the size and cost a true analog polysynth would require. Its built-in vocoder, complete with a gooseneck microphone, lets a player process their voice through the synth's filter bank for the robotic, talking-instrument effect that became one of the microKORG's signature applications.

Since its 2002 release, the microKORG has remained in continuous production and popularity for over two decades, an unusually long run for a synthesizer, driven by its combination of genuinely good analog-style sound, built-in vocoder novelty, and a price point accessible to students and hobbyists rather than just professional studios.

Sound character of the Korg microKORG

microKORG generates sound with digital DSP oscillators (the same modeling engine as Korg's MS2000) rather than true analog circuitry, producing bright, precise, sometimes glassy tones that emulate analog waveforms and effects, plus a built-in vocoder that imposes a metallic, robotic character onto vocal input.
