An original-era Mark VI alto from the model's 1954 debut through the end of the 1950s, the earliest and most historically significant production window of what many consider the greatest saxophone ever made.
About the Selmer Mark VI Alto (1954-1959)
The very first Mark VIs, introduced in 1954, combined ergonomic keywork, improved intonation and focused tone into what many players and historians regard as the definitive saxophone design - a combination that made the Mark VI an instant benchmark rather than one that grew into its reputation over subsequent decades. Every Mark VI, from this earliest run onward, was built from industry-standard cartridge brass, with Selmer never using recycled shell casings as material.
Serial numbers from this window run from roughly 55,201 in 1954 to 85,200 at the end of 1959, and its ribbed construction gives both durability and the characteristic warm sound the design has carried since day one. Owning an example from this original production era means owning the Mark VI in its most historically pure form, before any of the running design revisions that followed in later decades.
