About the Selmer Mark VI Alto (1970-1975)
By the early 1970s, Selmer had settled on the medium-short version of the Mark VI's bow as its final design, after years of offering short, medium-short, medium-long and long medium-bow variants - a 1970-1975 alto therefore represents the design at its most settled and refined state rather than an earlier experimental configuration. As with all Mark VIs, the body was built from cartridge brass, with Selmer never recycling shell casings for the material.
The high F# key, offered as an optional feature during the Mark VI's run, appears on many examples from this later period as the option became increasingly standard. What makes the Mark VI alto endure as a benchmark instrument decades after its production ended is the combination of its ribbed construction's durability, its warm and full-bodied tone, and keywork ergonomics that professional players still measure modern altos against.
