About the Yamaha YCL-221II

The YCL-221II's two-piece matte ABS resin body and compact YAC CLC-221 case are engineered deliberately around school logistics - a bass clarinet is an unusually bulky instrument, and Yamaha's compact case design makes it genuinely practical for buses and shared instrument storage rather than requiring a full-size case. Its 20-key, 7-covered-hole Böhm-system keywork and molded bore give a consistent, resistant-to-temperature-change response suited to first-time bass clarinet students.

Nickel-plated nickel-silver keywork, tan leather pads with tone boosters, and an adjustable thumb rest keep the build practical for classroom use, while the included Yamaha 4C mouthpiece, neck strap and cleaning accessories mean a school program can put a new player on the instrument without needing to source separate accessories.

Sound character of the Yamaha YCL-221II

As a bass clarinet, the YCL-221II carries a naturally deep, dark fundamental well below a standard Bb clarinet's range, though its two-piece molded ABS resin body trades some of the tonal richness a solid-wood bass clarinet has for a lighter, more temperature-stable instrument suited to first-time school players.
