Availability: 4/10 (Common)
A discontinued but well-regarded Japanese-made Grenadilla intermediate clarinet, valued on the used market for a warm, easy-response sound before Yamaha replaced it with the YCL-450.
About the Yamaha YCL-34
Built with a Grenadilla wood body and Böhm-system keywork across 17 keys and 6 rings, the YCL-34 pairs nickel-silver keys with stainless steel needle springs and a 66mm barrel tuned for a 14.70mm bore. Its bell design was specifically shaped to improve intonation and projection in the lower register, while the barrel itself was engineered to aid response, flexibility, and tonal focus rather than being a purely cosmetic component.
Discontinued in 2001 in favor of the YCL-450, the YCL-34 remains a sought-after used purchase because Yamaha's Japanese manufacturing from that era carries a reputation for consistency that some players feel later mass-produced intermediate models don't always match.

Sound character of the Yamaha YCL-34
The Grenadilla body gives the YCL-34 a warm, wood-typical tone, while the specifically shaped bell and 66mm barrel were tuned by Yamaha to improve response and intonation in the lower register rather than leaving that area to chance. Players and technicians who favor it on the used market describe an easy, unforced response that lets a note speak without extra breath pressure.
