Price history
Availability: 4/10 (Common)
A short-production Japanese professional clarinet from the mid-1980s, made from rich Grenadilla wood and regarded by players and repair technicians as a genuine rival to Buffet's R13 at the time.
About the Yamaha YCL-62
Produced only from around 1985 to 1987, the YCL-62 was Yamaha's answer to the dominant French professional clarinet, built from carefully seasoned Grenadilla with silver-plated keywork intended to compete directly with Buffet's R13 on tone and response rather than positioning itself as a budget alternative. Its short production run means original examples are relatively scarce today compared to Yamaha's longer-running professional models.
Because of that scarcity and the reputation it built among players and repair technicians who worked on it during and after its production years, the YCL-62 has become something of a collector's instrument on the used market - sought out specifically by players wanting a well-regarded 1980s Yamaha professional clarinet rather than a currently produced model.

Sound character of the Yamaha YCL-62
As a solid-Grenadilla professional clarinet built specifically to rival the Buffet R13's tonal warmth and response, the YCL-62 carries the same dense, resonant, wood-driven character prized on classic French-style professional instruments, rather than the brighter, thinner voice of a student-grade plastic clarinet.
