A 5-string version of the redesigned StingRay Special generation, fitted with two humbucking pickups (HH) instead of the single pickup of a standard StingRay, aimed at players wanting more tonal blending options.
About the Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Special 5 HH
The StingRay Special line, introduced in 2019, revised the classic StingRay with a roasted maple neck for added stability, an updated 18-volt-capable preamp, and other refinements over the original design dating to 1976. The HH designation on this 5-string model means two humbucking pickups rather than the single bridge humbucker of a standard StingRay, wired with a blend or selector control so players can mix neck and bridge pickup output for tonal options the single-pickup original doesn't offer.
As a 5-string, it adds a low B string for extended range, with a correspondingly wider neck and different pickup spacing than a 4-string StingRay Special. It remains part of Ernie Ball Music Man's US-made core lineup rather than the Indonesian-built Sterling by Music Man budget line, positioning it as a professional-tier instrument with a materially different price point from the SUB-series basses that borrow the same visual design.

Sound character of the Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay Special 5 HH
The HH pickup pair with a blend control lets this StingRay Special move between the punchy, bridge-only growl of a classic single-humbucker StingRay and a fuller, rounder tone with the neck humbucker mixed in, while the roasted maple neck and up-to-18-volt preamp add stability and extra headroom/clarity over the original 9-volt design.
