About the Fender Jazz Bass 1970 - 1974

Jazz Basses from this period still use the original 4-bolt neck plate design, distinguishing them from the 3-bolt necks with the 'bullet' truss rod adjustment that Fender introduced from 1974 onward. Within this window, Fender also phased out the original stacked concentric volume/tone knobs used since the Jazz Bass's 1960 introduction, replacing them around 1972 with the simpler 3-knob layout (separate neck volume, bridge volume, and a shared tone control) that became the long-term standard. Bodies remained alder with block fingerboard inlays and bound necks, continuing the look established in the mid-1960s.

Because this era falls under CBS-era Fender ownership, instruments from these years are sometimes viewed less favorably by buyers focused strictly on pre-CBS (pre-1965) originals, but the pickups, wood choices and construction remained largely consistent with earlier Jazz Basses; the control layout change is the most functionally relevant difference collectors and players should note when comparing examples from just before and after 1972.

Sound character of the Fender Jazz Bass 1970 - 1974

This vintage Jazz Bass predates the 3-bolt neck joint introduced in 1974, using the original 4-bolt design; its staggered-pole single-coil J pickups and alder body produce the classic scooped-mid, bright vintage Jazz Bass voice prized for its vintage snap.
