About the Fender Justin Meldal-Johnsen Road Worn Signature Mustang Bass

Built on the vintage Mustang Bass's 30-inch short scale and offset body, the JMJ signature model replaces the original's single coil with a custom pickup developed with Meldal-Johnsen, wired through a push-pull control that switches between passive operation and an active mode with additional output and EQ shaping. This gives the short-scale, easy-to-play Mustang Bass platform a tonal range beyond the punchy but tonally limited vintage original, without altering its compact body and neck dimensions.

The Road Worn relic finish simulates decades of play wear on the lacquer and hardware, a cosmetic treatment applied across several Fender artist-signature and vintage-style models rather than unique to this bass. As a Mexican-built artist signature model, it sits in Fender's mid-tier manufacturing rather than the American-made Custom Shop signature instruments reserved for higher-profile releases.

Sound character of the Fender Justin Meldal-Johnsen Road Worn Signature Mustang Bass

Like other Mustang Basses, a single pickup and short 30" scale define this signature model's warm, slightly loose, vintage-voiced character - the relic'd nitro finish affects only appearance, not the tone, which comes from the pickup and short-scale string tension.
