A hand-carved student violin built in Romania from Carpathian Mountain spruce and maple, finished at Knilling's US shop for a distinctive combination of European carving and American setup standards.
About the Knilling Bucharest
The Bucharest is hand-carved in Romania using solid spruce and solid maple sourced from the Carpathian Mountains, a region long associated with tonewood harvesting for European string instrument making. It follows a Stradivari body outline, with inlaid purfling around the top edge and ebony fittings throughout - fingerboard and tuning pegs - rather than the stained-hardwood substitutes on the cheapest student violins.
What distinguishes the Bucharest from many import violins is Knilling's practice of completing final setup at its own shop in St. Louis rather than shipping instruments straight from the Romanian workshop to retailers - adjusting the sound post, bridge and action to playing standard before the instrument reaches a customer, addressing a common complaint about imported violins arriving poorly set up. The outfit includes a case, fiberglass bow and rosin.

Sound character of the Knilling Bucharest
Made in Knilling's Romanian workshop line, the Bucharest uses solid carved spruce and maple with hand-finished setup work well above typical factory-stamped student violins, giving it a warmer, more resonant tone with more developed overtones than a purely machine-made instrument at a similar price point.
