About the Yamaha AV5

The AV5 uses two-piece bookmatched spruce for the top and two-piece maple for the back, seasoned and aged for at least five years before being carved - longer wood seasoning generally produces more tonal stability as the instrument ages, a detail Yamaha specifically highlights over its simpler V5 model. An oil varnish finish rather than a sprayed lacquer lets more of the top's vibration through.

Ebony fittings extend to the tailpiece (with four built-in fine tuners), fingerboard and inlaid purfling, with rosewood tuning pegs rather than ebony - a specific material choice at this tier. Expert shop adjustment to meet or exceed MENC standards is performed before sale, and the outfit includes a stackable ABS case plus a horsehair bow (Glasser fiberglass on some variants). Yamaha backs the AV5 with a 5-year warranty covering workmanship on the instrument, bow and case - notably longer than typical entry-instrument coverage.

Sound character of the Yamaha AV5

This 3/4-size AV5 shares Yamaha's traditional-line solid-wood construction and factory graduation, giving smaller-framed players the same clear, evenly balanced, moderately bright tone as the full-size V-5 rather than a scaled-down compromise instrument.

The history of the Yamaha AV5

The AV5 represents Yamaha's step-up tier above the basic V5, aimed at students whose teachers have identified a need for more tonal stability and projection than an entry violin provides, without yet requiring a full professional-grade instrument.
