An active variant within Fender's second-generation Player II lineup, adding an onboard preamp and revised electronics to the standard Player II Jazz Bass platform for extended tonal shaping.
About the Fender Player II Modified Active Jazz Bass
Built on the same Player II body and neck as the standard Player II Jazz Bass - alder body, updated neck heel and rolled fingerboard edges for the second Player generation - the Modified Active version adds an onboard active preamp to the traditional dual single-coil pickup layout, giving bass and treble boost/cut beyond what the standard model's passive volume/volume/tone circuit allows. This puts it between the passive standard Player II Jazz Bass and Fender's American-made active bass options in terms of tonal flexibility, while remaining in Fender's Mexican manufacturing tier.
The 'Modified' designation within Player II generally marks instruments with deviations from the base spec - here, active electronics - rather than indicating a different body or pickup type. As a still-current model in Fender's lineup at the time of its release, it represents Fender's attempt to offer active-bass tonal range without moving a customer up to the American Professional II series.

Sound character of the Fender Player II Modified Active Jazz Bass
Adding an active preamp to the Player II's dual single-coil Jazz Bass pickups turns a fixed passive tone into a fully sweepable one: the bass and treble boost/cut circuits push output and brightness well beyond what the passive Player II Jazz Bass can reach, at the cost of the slightly softer, more vintage-leaning roll-off a passive circuit gives.
