Yamaha's entry-level TRBX-series bass, built to deliver reliable construction and playability at a beginner-friendly price rather than compete on tonal versatility.
About the Yamaha TRBX174 4-String Bass
The TRBX174 sits at the foundation of Yamaha's TRBX lineup, a series designed around the idea that a first bass should be light, easy to play and consistently built rather than loaded with features. It pairs a mahogany body with a maple neck and rosewood fingerboard at a standard 34-inch scale, keeping the instrument's weight and neck feel approachable for players still developing technique. Two single-coil-sized pickups and a straightforward passive volume/volume/tone control layout keep the electronics simple and reliable rather than aiming for onboard tonal shaping.
Yamaha's manufacturing consistency, built up across decades of instrument production well beyond guitars and basses, is the main argument for the TRBX174 over similarly priced instruments from smaller manufacturers: intonation, fret work and hardware fit tend to be dependable out of the box. It occupies the segment below the mid-range TRBX3xx/5xx models, which add active electronics and higher-grade pickups, making the 174 the practical choice for a first instrument or a reliable backup rather than a main gigging bass for a professional.

Sound character of the Yamaha TRBX174 4-String Bass
As Yamaha's entry-level TRBX model, this pairs a mahogany body with a maple neck and passive single-coil-sized pickups rather than active electronics or humbuckers, giving a warm, moderate-output tone with a rounder fundamental than the humbucker-equipped, mass-optimized TRBX304 above it in the range.
