A late-1970s American-made bass known for its unusually heavy, fully routed ash body and switchable active/passive electronics with a phase switch.
About the Peavey T-40 Bass Guitar
Introduced in 1978, the T-40 paired dual humbucking pickups with an unusually flexible control set for its era: an active/passive switch, individual pickup volume and blend controls, an active treble-boost circuit, and a phase switch for out-of-phase tones, all in a single production bass at a time when most instruments offered simple passive volume-and-tone controls. The body is fully routed ash beneath the pickguard to accommodate that electronics package, which contributes to the T-40's widely noted heaviness compared to contemporaries.
That weight, combined with a robust build and Peavey's then-unusual approach to large-scale domestic guitar manufacturing with computer-controlled routing, gave the T-40 a reputation as a durable but demanding instrument to play standing for long sets. It remains a distinctive example of late-70s American bass design experimentation rather than a variant within a longer-running signature or reissue lineage.

Sound character of the Peavey T-40 Bass Guitar
The T-40's active/passive switch, blend control, active treble boost and phase switch give it an unusually wide tonal range for a 1978 design - the ash body adds brightness and articulation over a warmer alder or mahogany body, and the humbuckers plus treble boost can push into an aggressive, growling upper register, while the phase switch produces a thin, hollow out-of-phase tone.
