About the Sterling SUB StingRay Ray5

The Ray5 carries the StingRay's distinctive silhouette, large pickguard and single humbucking pickup mounted close to the bridge, a placement that gives the StingRay family its characteristically punchy, midrange-forward growl compared to the mellower tone of pickups placed further from the bridge. Extending that formula to five strings means a wider neck and a pickup with correspondingly wider pole-piece spacing, built to keep output balanced across the added low B rather than simply widening an existing four-string design.

As part of the SUB line, the Ray5 is built in Indonesia to a specification well below Ernie Ball Music Man's US-made StingRay Special 5, using an active 2-band or 3-band preamp (depending on production year) rather than the more elaborate electronics of the American original. It exists to put the StingRay's tone and body shape within reach of players who cannot justify the price of the US-made instrument, at the cost of the higher-grade hardware, pickup wind consistency and finish quality that come with Ernie Ball Music Man's own production.

Sound character of the Sterling SUB StingRay Ray5

Like the original StingRay, the Ray5's single humbucker mounted close to the bridge is the main reason for its punchy, midrange-forward growl - a pickup placed further from the bridge would sound noticeably mellower - and the active 2/3-band EQ lets that core StingRay voice be pushed brighter or scooped as needed.
