About the Fender Player II Mustang Bass PJ

The Player II Mustang Bass PJ uses the Mustang body shape at a short 30-inch scale rather than the standard 34-inch bass scale, making it noticeably easier to reach across for players with smaller hands or those wanting a more compact instrument. The alder body pairs with a Modern "C"-profile neck finished in satin urethane, a 9.5-inch-radius fingerboard with rolled edges and 19 medium jumbo frets, at a narrower 1.5-inch nut width.

The defining electronic feature is the PJ pickup configuration: a Player Series Alnico V split-coil P-bass pickup at the neck position paired with a single-coil J-bass pickup near the bridge, switched via a 3-way toggle that engages the bridge pickup, the neck pickup, or both together - giving a wider tonal range than either pickup type alone. The bridge is a standard 4-saddle design with a bolt-on neck construction and vintage-style open-gear tuners.

Sound character of the Fender Player II Mustang Bass PJ

The PJ pickup layout - a split-coil Precision pickup at the neck plus a single-coil Jazz pickup at the bridge - lets this short-scale (30") bass blend P-Bass punch with J-Bass bite; the short scale itself adds looser string tension and a slightly warmer, less taut low end.

Punchy Warm Midrange-forward

The history of the Fender Player II Mustang Bass PJ

Fender's original Mustang Bass launched in 1966 as a short-scale companion to the Mustang guitar, aimed partly at younger or smaller-statured players and later adopted by musicians who simply preferred its compact feel and punchy tone. The Player II Series revived the short-scale Mustang concept with the PJ pickup configuration and the neck/fingerboard refinements shared across the rest of the 2024 Player II lineup.
