About the Fender Player Precision Bass

The first-generation Player Precision Bass launched in 2018 as the direct replacement for the Mexican-built Standard Series, bringing upgraded pickups and a refined neck profile at a similar price point to its predecessor. The alder body pairs with a modern-C-profile maple neck, offered with either a pau ferro or maple fingerboard, at a 9.5-inch radius and 20 frets across a 1.625-inch nut width.

The pickup is a single Player Series Alnico V split-coil P-bass unit, chosen for a fuller output than the ceramic pickups used on the outgoing Standard Series, wired in the classic single-volume, single-tone Precision Bass layout. The bridge is a modern 4-saddle design with slotted saddles for improved tuning stability and attack compared to older-style bridges, and the bass was offered in seven finishes across maple and pau ferro fingerboard options.

Sound character of the Fender Player Precision Bass

The original Player series' split single-coil pickup delivers the same fundamental P-Bass formula as later revisions - hum-cancelling design, thick low-mid punch - with the era's specific pickup winding and alder body giving it a slightly warmer, less hi-fi voice than the Player II update.

The history of the Fender Player Precision Bass

Fender introduced the Player Series in 2018 across both its guitar and bass lineups, positioning it as an entry point with meaningfully improved specifications over the Standard Series it replaced. It became one of Fender's best-selling bass lines in the years that followed, until the Player II Series took over the name in July 2024 with further neck and fingerboard refinements.
