A student-model flat-top one step up from the LG-0: solid spruce top over solid mahogany back, sides and neck, ladder-braced in both directions, with a compact 14 1/8-inch lower bout that let Gibson use a one-piece mahogany back.
About the Gibson LG-1
The LG-1 was introduced alongside the LG-0 and LG-2 in 1947 as part of Gibson's affordable student-guitar range, sharing the LG-0's ladder-braced construction but stepping up to a solid spruce top over the LG-0's all-mahogany build. Back, sides and neck remain mahogany, with full body binding, a simple single-stripe rosette and a straight rosewood bridge distinguishing it from the more bare-bones LG-0. The compact 14 1/8-inch lower bout allowed straight-across ladder bracing on both top and back, and let Gibson use a single-piece mahogany back without a center seam.
Early examples (through 1954) carry a 14/19-fret rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays; from 1955 this changed to the more common 14/20-fret layout. Headstock branding was a screened or decal logo on a black-faced peg head, with three-on-a-plate nickel tuners for most of the production run - by 1967, close to the end of production, the neck narrowed, tuners changed to individual Kluson Deluxe units, and the pickguard grew larger and thicker.

Sound character of the Gibson LG-1
The LG-1's small mahogany-body construction with a spruce top and (on most examples from this era) ladder bracing rather than X-bracing gives it a softer, warmer, less sustained voice than X-braced flat-tops of the period, with limited projection typical of Gibson's entry-level small-bodied guitars.

The history of the Gibson LG-1
Gibson built the LG-1 at a rate of roughly 1,250 per year from 1947 until production ended in 1968, making it one of the company's higher-volume student instruments of the era. Its ladder-braced, all-mahogany-plus-spruce construction gives it a punchier, more midrange-forward tone than Gibson's X-braced models of the same period, a character some players specifically seek out despite - or because of - its budget origins.
