About the Gold Tone Little Gem

A banjolele (banjo-ukulele) replaces a ukulele's wooden soundboard with a banjo-style drum head stretched over a rim, producing a brighter, more percussive, banjo-like snap than a standard wooden ukulele. The Little Gem's 8-inch rim and head are both clear acrylic rather than the traditional wood rim and animal-skin or mylar head, making the entire resonating chamber transparent - a visual novelty on top of the tonal difference a banjolele already offers.

Construction includes a maple neck and fingerboard (rather than a separate rosewood or walnut board), a maple bridge with an ebony cap, and a 15-inch concert scale with 18 frets at a 1 3/8-inch nut. Twelve brackets under a flat-bar tension hoop let the head tension be adjusted, similar to a full-size banjo, tuned in standard ukulele GCEA. Sealed guitar-style tuners keep tuning stable despite the light overall build, and it's available in four "gem" colors - Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire and Amethyst - with a gig bag included.

Sound character of the Gold Tone Little Gem

Replacing a wooden soundboard with a drum-style acrylic head over a rim is what gives this its banjo character: a bright, percussive snap with fast decay rather than the sustained resonance of a wooden ukulele top, further sharpened by the acrylic head's harder surface compared to natural skin or mylar.

The history of the Gold Tone Little Gem

Gold Tone, known for banjo, resonator and hybrid fretted instruments, built the Little Gem as a compact, visually distinctive entry into banjo-ukulele playing, aimed at players drawn to the banjolele's bright tone but wanting something more novel-looking than a traditional wood-rimmed instrument.
