Kala Journeyman U-Bass
Price: 329 EUR – 519 EUR
Availability: 6/10 (Common)
A hollow-bodied, cutaway U-Bass with F-holes and a full 4-band active preamp with built-in tuner, aimed at gigging bassists who need onstage tone control beyond the simple volume/tone of Kala's solid-body U-Basses.
About the Kala Journeyman U-Bass
Where Kala's solid-body U-Basses use simple passive electronics, the Journeyman is built as a genuine acoustic-electric instrument: a mahogany body with F-holes and a cutaway for upper-fret access, paired with the UK-500B preamp offering separate bass, mid, treble and volume controls plus a built-in tuner, powered by two CR2032 batteries. That's a substantially more capable control set than the single volume/tone knobs on Kala's entry U-Basses, aimed at players who need to shape tone on the fly across different rooms and PA systems.
Construction is a 16-fret neck at a 20.875-inch scale (shorter than Kala's Solid Body model) with a rosewood fingerboard and bridge, Graph Tech TUSQ nut, phenolic saddle, and custom black die-cast tuners. White binding around the body and F-holes gives it a visually distinct, more traditional-instrument look compared to Kala's plainer solid-body U-Basses, and it ships in a custom-fitted U-Bass gig bag.

Sound character of the Kala Journeyman U-Bass
The hollow mahogany body with F-holes resonates more freely than Kala's solid-body U-Basses, adding acoustic warmth and sustain under the same thick synthetic strings that give every U-Bass its round, upright-like fundamental. The 4-band active preamp lets that warm base tone be shaped toward more mid and treble presence on stage than the passive electronics on entry U-Bass models allow.

The history of the Kala Journeyman U-Bass
The Journeyman extended Kala's U-Bass line into hollow-body acoustic-electric territory specifically for working bassists who found the solid-body models' simple electronics limiting on stage, adding professional-grade tone shaping without abandoning the short-scale rubber-string concept that defines the U-Bass.
