About the Kala U-Bass Spalted Maple

The Spalted Maple U-Bass uses spalted maple throughout the body: wood that has begun to break down under controlled fungal exposure before drying, producing dark, irregular zone lines and streaking unique to each set, prized visually the same way flamed or quilted maple is prized on electric guitars. Unlike Kala's simpler solid-body U-Basses, this model is a true acoustic-electric build with a hollow body and a Venetian cutaway for upper-fret access.

Construction includes a mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, Graph Tech NuBone nut, and custom black die-cast tuners, at a 20.8125-inch scale across 16 frets with black binding framing the spalted top. U-BASS Active EQ electronics give onstage tone shaping beyond a passive pickup circuit, and like all U-Basses, tone comes primarily from Kala's proprietary thick Aquila Thunderblack strings rather than steel roundwounds. It ships in a padded gig bag.
