About the Kala U-Bass Bamboo

The Bamboo U-Bass takes Kala's short-scale, solid-body U-Bass concept - full 4-string bass tuning through thick, low-tension synthetic strings at a compact scale - and switches the body wood to bamboo. Bamboo is technically a grass rather than a hardwood, but its density and hardness make it a viable tonewood substitute, generally described as giving a slightly brighter, more defined attack than the softer okoume used on Kala's standard solid-body U-Basses, while also being a faster-renewing, more sustainable material to source.

The rest of the build follows Kala's solid-body U-Bass template: a maple neck, fretted fingerboard, and the same passive pickup and simple volume/tone control layout as Kala's other entry U-Basses, with the bamboo's natural grain typically left visible under a satin or gloss finish rather than painted over.

Sound character of the Kala U-Bass Bamboo

Bamboo is harder and denser than the okoume used on Kala's standard solid-body U-Bass, which generally translates to a brighter, more defined attack on top of the same warm, upright-like fundamental that the thick synthetic strings provide. It's still unmistakably a U-Bass tone, just with slightly more note definition than the softer-wood version.

The history of the Kala U-Bass Bamboo

Kala introduced bamboo-bodied instruments across parts of its ukulele and U-Bass range as both a tonal variant and a sustainability-focused alternative to tropical hardwoods increasingly restricted by international wood-trade regulations.
